Newborns are ‘culture-less’ despite having some dispositions to learning certain cultural tendencies. Childhood is a period of time when children are most susceptible to cultural and environmental influences than any other in the life span. By adulthood, they have learned many cultural and societal norms and have practiced them so often that these behaviors come naturally and inherently. This process of learning is called socialization, a process by which they learn and integrate the codes and patterns of behaviors that are affected by culture. (Matsumono and Juang, 2004) Hence, it is apparent how cultures are able to shape a person’s personality and behaviors. With this, we look at an example on how culture influences the experience of psychopathology. In an individualistic culture, like the Western culture where it emphasizes the role of the individual, one’s desires are predominated over the rights of others.
