Although no type of discrimination is clear cut, discrimination in the workplace based on marital status is an especially multi-faceted issue. In the recent past, as women have gained status and number in the workplace, discrimination based on marital status has become a more complex issue, both socially and legally. The most prevalent of the new developments in this issue concern discrimination against married co-workers and the contrast between how single and married people are discriminated against because of their status. Companies have instilled policies in the workplace regarding married employees. On the Federal level, the Civil Rights Act of 1991 states that if there is no evidence of business necessity, the employment practice is considered to unlawfully discriminate. But, the Seventh Circuit Appellate Court drew several conclusions stating that it is less favourable for spouses working together.
