Chapter One Introduction The subject of this thesis is the analysis, conservation, and stabilization of a lace lappet from the Morris-Jumel Mansion. The Morris–Jumel Mansion is an historic house museum located in the Washington Heights section of northern Manhattan. The Mansion is the oldest remaining residential house in Manhattan and its collection reflects 237 years of the history, culture, and art of New York. It was built in 1765 as a summer retreat for Colonel Roger Morris, a British Loyalist who later fled the house when the American Revolution began. Architecturally, the 9,000 square foot house is significant in the study of colonial America as it represents “one of the finest and earliest examples of English-influenced Palladian structures” of that era. In addition, the house has an octagonal drawing room, the first of its kind in the American colonies, and one of the earliest colossal porticos built in this country.
