For example, in the 1950s Joseph McCarthy led a hunt for Communists. People were controlled by the fear that Americans may have Communist ties. McCarthy, along with some accomplices, led the hunt that eventually ruined lives. McCarthys actions stirred fear in many Americans. The American people sat back and watched as countless people were accused. Another instance is in the 1600s when Abigail Williams and other girls led a witch hunt in Salem, Massachusetts. Abigail stirred fear in the members of the Salem community. Many people were accused and put on trial because of the fear of witchcraft. In this case, there is a strong comparison between Abigail Williams, specifically her accusing people of witchcraft and Joseph McCarthy, specifically his accusing others of being Communist sympathies.
