INTRODUCTION
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a frequent, chronic, costly, and disabling disorder that is present in several medical settings, but is under recognized and under treated. This anxiety disorder is characterized by recurrent obsessions and uncontrolled compulsions where the person experiences prolonged excessive worry about circumstances in ones life. To fully understand this disorder it is essential to differentiate between obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are recurring, unwanted thoughts, ideas, and impulses that interrupt normal thinking and cause anxiety or fear. The most common obsessive symptoms are the persistent fear of harm to oneself or a loved one, an excessive need to do things perfectly or correctly, and a fear of contamination. On the other hand, compulsions are behaviors or rituals that are repeated intentionally to try to control the obsessions. Classic compulsions include washing or checking, counting while doing another compulsive action, and repeating things or endlessly rearranging items to keep them in perfect alignment (NIMH, 2005).
