What is memory? How important is it in our everyday lives? Evidently, memory is central to a wide variety of human cognitive tools such as the abilities to read, write, speak, and understand others. Without memory, or the ability to communicate, humans would lack similar knowledge as newborn babies. Ever since the late 1950s, psychologists have attempted to determine how information processing helps in the comprehension of human cognition. Although psychologists have only been limitedly successful, an extensive number of theories and models have been developed in order to gain insight into how human memory functions. However, psychologists generally tend to agree that the processes of encoding, storage, and retrieval are all significant to memory; it is how these processes are explained which leads to differentiation amongst the various theories and models. For instance, the Multi-Store Model attempts to explain the different stages and processes involved in storing information in our memories.
