The Reality of Rejection in Updikes A & P
Human experiences have an impact on all, from minute occurrences to significant events. John Updike the author of A & P, and other short story fictions, elects to choose the minute occurrences or microscopic accuracies of life (333) to have a major impact on his characters life. Rejection is the main theme in John Updikes short story. Sammy, the main character of the story, is an ordinary person who longs for the prestige associated with a heroic character. He does this by standing up to his manager on behalf of a young girl, he tries to protect. Sammy wants the prestige of a heroic character; however, he faces the reality of rejection when his action goes unnoticed. John Updike utilizes primary elements, such as the rising action, climax, falling action, and the resolution to convey the theme of rejection.
