The recent death of Pope John Paul the second and the election of Pope Benedict the sixteenth made me realize that I knew absolutely nothing about how leader of my religion is chosen. As a catholic I feel that it is important to know how my leader is elected. Watching the news coverage of the election really made me wonder about the rituals and the ceremonies that I was unable to watch such as what goes on behind the closed doors of the conclave and what happens right after the current Pope passes away.
When the pope dies a whole chain of events begins. It starts with the prefect of the household informing the camerlengo of the popes death. The camerlengo then must verify the popes death in the presence of the papal master of ceremonies, the cleric prelates of the Apostolic Camera and the secretary of the Apostolic Camera, who issues the death certificate. The pope is prove dead by being tapped on the forehead with a silver hammer. The camerlengo then tells the vicar of Rome and then he informs Rome that the pope has pas......
