Bleachers by John Grisham Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In John Grisham’s novel Bleachers, Coach Eddie Rake depicts the character of a good man because he displays the qualities of a great coach and mentor, a supportive father-figure, and a helpful community member throughout his many years in Messina. Rake voluntarily works with various townspeople when they need assistance. Meanwhile, he always finds the time to stand by his past players when they face difficult challenges in their lives. Rake, as coach, uses his football drills and lectures to impart lessons that his players remember for a lifetime. During his practices, Coach Rake teaches his Spartan players football lessons that lead to life lessons. On the field, Rake gives Nat Sawyer the confidence “to believe in himself” when Nat has to face his homosexuality. Years later, when Nat wants to open a bookshop and cannot deal with the discrimination of the townspeople, he reminds himself of Rake’s words “to have confidence, believe in yourself, and never worry about what others think.” This motivates Nat, once again, and he successfully opens his bookshop.
