Everyone wants to fit in or belong. This starts with relationships. In the book, Keeper N Me, Garnet has always had trouble with acceptance and fitting in with everyone around him. When he was young, his foster parents and other children were confusing him and neglecting his feelings. Later on, when the streets were his home, his identity continued to change just as often as his friends would. After arriving at the reserve, he had to deal with reactions from his family. Garnet has struggled with relationships from his foster families, to the streets, to White Dog, but these relationships helped him find his place.
When Garnet disappeared into the foster homes, no one ever told him who he was. Everyone around Garnet believed the stereotypes about Indians.
