Lee describes how he worked with a small group of Singaporean leaders and transformed a poor and polyglot city into a successful modern nation by “getting the basics right.” In a beautifully written prose, he narrates how they identified the key problems of nation-building, analyzed what needed to be done, and then did it. In the second half of the book, Lee looks back at his experiences as counselor to world leaders. At the time of the Vietnam War, Lee gave “pep talks” to American presidents to “stick it out.” This informal conversations with him made Lee an important interlocutor who knew how to get it right in world politics. Throughout his memoirs, Lee displays the mind of a brilliant lawyer as he analyzes political problems.
