In this essay, I am going to talk about the status of written English, in comparison with spoken English. Traditionally, written English is considered more prominent, and carries more weight than spoken English. In the next paragraph I am going to look at why this is, and in the following paragraphs, I will cover the advantages and disadvantages of the two forms. Then I will conclude it with my own thoughts and an evaluation.
Written English is firstly considered more permanent. An example of where this is obvious is on birth certificates and passports
they are all written. Once written down, they remain on that piece of paper. Writing is thought of to be a much more formal way of communicating, and there are still many situations where it would be completely inappropriate to communicate in any other way than writing. For example in the exception of oral examinations, the majority of formal exams (GCSEs, A levels,) are all still written.
