Shylock's Jewishness and Profession Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

To What Extent is Shylock Defined by His Jewishness and His Profession? Shylock is a successful Jewish moneylender who lives in Venice; he is angered by his mistreatment at the hands of the Christians in Venice, particularly Antonio. The traits of his character are repeated frequently: his focus on money, hatred of Christians, pride of his Jewish identity and cunningness. Shylock only appears in five scenes but still he dominates. Shylock is a very proud man, he is not afraid to show off that he is a Jew and he is not at all troubled by the Christian’s views on his methods of money lending. Although Shylock carries on with his methods and shows off he is a Jew, the Christian’s mistreatment of Shylock does affect him; the Christian’s discrimination of Shylock causes Shylock to hate the Christians. Shylock wants revenge on the Christians; this is clear when Shylock talks to his daughter, Jessica, about eating with Antonio as: ‘…to feed upon/The prodigal Christian’ in Act 2 Scene 5. The effect of the Christian’s mistreatment of Shylock is shown again in Act 3 Scene 1 when......
