The Greek system of the Polis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Polis Will Durant once stated, “the family is the center of civilization.” Never has this quote more been proven true when we look at the concept of the polis. When reviewing the idea of the polis we need took concentrate on a few things: First, why did the polis happen, and how did it evolve. Second, what role did geography play when creating a polis? Third, what set the polis apart from earlier types of settlements? In other words what made the polis unique. The concept of creating a polis came about as a way to provide protection for one’s family. Several families would settle a specific area, and band together. This would provide a greater strength in numbers, and in turn provide greater protection for the citizens as a whole. These separate city/states were completely independent of each other. In fact even if a polis sent out citizens to another area to settle it, those citizens still remained independent of its “mother” polis.
