Youth gang-related homicides in the United States are growing every year. Gangs and their violence are also spreading out to suburbs, smaller cities and rural areas. This has become a major problem to our society with children joining gangs as young as six years of age. Many law enforcement agencies appear to be committed to take dangerous criminals off the street, but just locking people up does not solve the problem of gang violence that plagues this country everyday. What are the solutions to stopping gang violence? The most fruitful strategies for dealing with gangs are those which emphasize prevention and intervention instead of suppression and enforcement. Incarceration is not the answer it is a badge of honor amongst peers to go to jail. This gives the individual street credibility and tells the "homies" that you are down for their cause and in some cases you can be trusted.
