Tower of London Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Tower of London British History 10:00am-10:50am Due December 9, 2005 William, the King of England, laid the foundation of the oldest palace, fortress, and prison in Europe. He began the construction of the Great Tower in 1078, which was the original tower. Throughout the reigns of following monarchs, what began as one tower was expanded and improved to become the Tower of London, or officially, ‘Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London’ (McGillick). The completed Tower of London included twenty towers in all. William the Conqueror built his fortress, the Great Tower, which was renamed the White Tower, near the Thames River. It was built where a former Roman fortress had once been. Protecting his White Tower were the walls that still stood from the time of the Roman fortress on both the east and south sides, ditches on both the north and west sides, a new stone wall, and also the river (Minney, 15).
