What is public discourse, and what is its ideal form? Amusing Ourselves to Death describes all the forms of discourse in the United States, yet does not state which one is the best. In this book, Neil Postman analyzes every form of public discourse that has developed over the centuries, especially television. Postman is analytical in his own discourse because he goes into great detail in how defective each form is, while also listing their positive qualities. There is one form of discourse that Postman seems to accept. By reading and examining Postmans issues with each form, one can be led to believe that the ideal form would have to be the written word because of how highly he talks about it and is not criticized it that much.
