John Gage’s- “Why write?” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

With the Grain In this essay John T. Gage goes into many meanings of writing and why you should write. In the first few pages he gives us an insight to what other philosophers such as Socrates and Aristotle think about writing. Each has very different views about it and what they think writing is really about. Socrates was big on the idea that writing was manipulative and dishonest. He believed that writing is a false art and it leads youth away from the truth. Writing something down on paper he thought was just a one way communication, leaving no room to change a writers mind. Socrates attacked a group of writers called sophists. He believed they were simply skilled liars; they made a living by making the worse case appear the better. (pg.10) Socrates also believed that writing was an obstacle to the truth. Next we have Aristotle who was a student of Plato. Aristotle did not believe in writing as a means of gaining power as the sophists had thought or an obstacle to the truth like Socrates believed.
