The theme difference is explored vastly In Whats eating Gilbert Grape. There are not only major physical differences apparent in the film (relating to character) difference is what creates the alienation between the Grape family and the rest of the population in Endora. The Grape family is perceived as abnormal, we see this through the difference in family structure, there are no strong male influences on the family (father committing suicide, older brother got away) therefore we can call it weak. Difference is also discovered when looking at the roles that each character plays and the duties that they carry our.
