The Effect of Credited Versus Discredited Eyewitnesses on the Verdict of Guilt Eyewitness testimonies are very influential in the court system. Whole prosecution cases can be based on the accounts of people who witnessed the crime. A claim made by litigators is often more powerful when there is an eyewitness to collaborate their claims. People’s memories are not perfect, so the information they give is their interpretation of what happened, which may not be the actual truth. There have been innocent people convicted of crimes because of unreliable testimony. Many researchers have looked at the effects of an eyewitness on a jury and their verdict, and more specifically at discredited witnesses. A discredited witness is one whose testimony is flawed in one or more of many different ways. In Loftus’ (1974) study on eyewitness’s testimony, the witness was discredited because of a vision problem. In Berman and Cutler’s (1996) study, the witnesses were discredited by conflicting information in their testimonies, either on the stand or from pretrial interviews. In our study we will......
