The Portrayal of Women in James Joyce's 'Dubliners' Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

I. Introduction This paper concerns itself with the portrayal of women in James Joyce’s Dubliners with regard to the two female protagonists of the short stories “Clay” and “Eveline”. Maria and Eveline are portrayed as victims of society, home and religious doctrines. Both women are trapped by familial, social and economic pressures. In this paper I will firstly analyse how the two women are presented and characterized by James Joyce. Secondly attention will be drawn to how society, family and the Catholic church influence these two women’s lives. II. Portrayal of Eveline Joyce describes his main character Eveline as an indecisive 19-year-old woman torn between her past and her future. Eveline is portrayed as a woman burdened by responsibilities, working hard and leading a joyless life. Her joyless life represents the ambition of young people to leave Ireland to be free. Joyce allows the reader a short look at a fateful moment in Eveline’s life. ‘She had consented to go away, to leave her home. Was that wise? She tried to weigh each sid......
