The concept of labelling is brought to us by the group of sociologists called the social action sociologists or interactionist sociologists. These sociologists base their theories on the idea that the actions of people around us in society influence the way we behave. They believe our social identity (the way others perceive us) also influences the way we perceive ourselves, and we are very aware of the people around us. However these theorists reject the idea that people have no control over their life, and are merely puppets controlled by external forces. Social action sociologists are more concerned with individuals and the way they interact with each other than with the way society is structured and how external forces such as institutions control the individual. Functionalist theories and conflict perspectives pay greater attention to the way society as a whole operates, where the social action perspectives concentrate on the analysis of how individual actors behave towards each other and society.
