The United States was born during an age of enlightenment that recognized the natural rights of human beings and their ability to reason scientifically and logically. Anyone, regardless of his class or wealth had the opportunity to read uncensored documents. Philosophers such as John Locke promoted new ideas that anyone was capability of success and that environment molded a person instead of a predestined fate. Very few people lived up to these early American values as Benjamin Franklin, a poor-born American, had lived. Franklin, born into a lower-class family in Massachusetts, eventually grew to gain recognition as a scientist, diplomat, intellectual, as well as a successful businessman and multi-millionaire. One of the most influential philosophers on American independence was John Locke, whos ideas of “life, liberty, and property” can directly be seen in the Declaration of Independence.
