Houseman’s “To an Athlete Dying Young” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

A. E. Houseman starts his poem “To an Athlete Dying Young” talking about the moment after winning the race. The townspeople carried him on their shoulders and cheered all the way home. In the second stanza, the poet uses the line “Shoulder-high we bring you home” (line 6) in an unusual way to explain the setting. Instead of the athlete being on their shoulders cheering, they are carrying him to the cemetery in a coffin. When they reach the destination, they will set him down in the bottom of his grave site. “Townsman of a stiller town.” (line8) is saying that he is the man that is going to be occupying his new quite town, or the cemetery. “The road all runners come,” in line 5, is referring to how every human being is to run the race of life, and at the end everyone must run on the road of death. The third and fourth stanza has to do with the fact that he was smart to die young because he will never see his record cut or his glory fade away.
