Capital punishment is widespread throughout Asia for drug offences and infamous in Singapore, especially following the Nguyen Tuong Van case, which reunited debate over capital punishment particularly because Singapore has the highest execution rate for drug offences in the world. The question many Australians asked and debated over was, should the death penalty be imposed for drug offences? I believe it should in countries that need it and Singapore is and was a country that needed it, as do many other countries throughout Asia.
The majority of Asian countries have higher populations in one town than the entire Australian population, except Singapore, which has a population of just over four million, smaller then the population of the city of Melbourne. In the 1980s more than 5000 people were arrested annually on narcotics charges in Singapore. Imagine 5000 people annually in Melbourne being arrested on narcotics charges.
