Nineteenth century inventors provided the impetus to create several new mediums for communication. With the advent of electricity came the ability to create several new entities which would ultimately transform popular culture and perception. The motion picture, first screened in the late nineteenth century, was a new form of expression which would undergo several improvements to captivate more and more audiences. The effect of this medium, changed as it trekked through many stages of development.

Using the development of still photography in the 1830s, scientists developed means of setting the photographs into motion and creating new ways of projecting the moving images onto a screen.
