“Dulce et Decorum est” Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“Dulce et decorum est” is a very well known poem of the first world war. It is written by Wilfred Owen, who had his own personal experience as a soldier during the first world war. The poem is about the fighting and struggle many of them experienced. The poem is a very moving one as the detailed images created make the reader feel all the more invoved with the soldiers. This particular soldier had the experience of watching a fellow soldier die, and being unable to help him. The title of the poem “Dulce et Decorum est” means “it is sweet and right”. This is quite an effective title as it is repeated at the end with an additional phrase, “Pro patria mori”. The first line “Bent double like old beggers under sacks”. This simile immediately creates a picture of the soldiers squashed in a trench underground. The troops are so tired that they are being compared to beggers. In the next line when he says “Coughing like hags”, we can imagine this was the deadly poison gas which choked many of the soldiers to death. This is another simile Wilfred Owen uses.
