The setting of Across the Nightingale Floor is in a mythical feudal Japan but could it be in a western setting and still be successful? I dont think it could. I think there are many different reasons that contribute to the need for an oriental setting. In Feudal Japan there were very different social rules than in the Western world today and in the Western world back then, Asian social rules are very important in the plot of Across the Nightingale floor. Martial arts are a major hobby in Asian culture and are a major theme in Across the Nightingale Floor. In Asian religion and culture myth is much more accepted. The characters are Asian story norm, Takeo the young unexpected hero, Shigeru the teacher and serious father figure, Kenji, the wise teacher, Kaede the strong female, Shizuka the unexpected mentor.
