Requiem for a Cohesive Social Discourse in Arnold’s Dover Beach The Victorian period witnessed a radical diversification in modes of thought and the process of self-conceptualization . Much of the writing produced during this transitory and pluralized era reflects a destabilization of ‘traditions of understanding’ and identity. Consequently such works function as both ideological commentary and creative manifestations of a desire to reconcile self and society in a homogeneous teleology. The Victorian poet and critic, Matthew Arnold was particularly distressed by the proliferation of competing discourses, which he saw as divisive and alienating. He observed cognitive dissonance pervading religious, political, and social frameworks, and suggested its existence to be in correlation to the ‘height which knowledge [has] come’ . In his poem Dover Beach he explores the isolating consequences of an atomized society and simultaneously, in an attempt to counteract the dislocation, strives to formulate a cohesive and unified basis for a harmonizing social discourse.
