Writing and Death: The Story of Poe's Life
Edgar Allan Poe was the son of an actor and actress, David and Eliza Poe. He was orphaned at the age of three and went to live with the family of John and Fanny Allan in Richmond, Virginia. Poe is best known for his tales of the mysterious and macabre. To this day there is still a great deal of mystery surrounding his life, from his writings to his death.
When Edgar was fourteen, he met the first woman in his life, Jane Stith Stanard, the inspiration for his poem To Helen (1831). However, Ms. Stanard passed away only a year later. In 1825 Poe became engaged to Elmira Royster. While he was away, he would write many letters which were intercepted by her parents and Elmira would never receive them. When he went back to see her, he had found that she had married someone else. This left Poe very depressed. Poes relationship with the Allan family was never a close one and this became evident when John Allan refused to pay Poes tuition at the University of Virginia.
