Calamity Jane: Queer? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The 1953 film, Calamity Jane, raises questions in the viewer. These questions may stem from the queer aura of the film. It seems as though each character and the film as a whole create this aura through the story that they tell and the troubles they may have. The combination of genre trouble and gender trouble leads to the overall queer quality of the film. First, the genre of Calamity Jane should be considered a western. Though in many ways, Calamity Jane goes against the grain of what typically defines a western film. Generally speaking, in a western the leading character is usually a strong male hero figure; in Calamity Jane, however, Calamity Jane, who dresses and fits in among the men, is the main character and heroine. For example, in the beginning of the film, one of the leading male characters, Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin, is shown as the typical “damsel in distress.” This is in his being held captive by the Indians. Also, the film not only has a female lead, but the film is also a musical. Within a musical, the action stops and the scene becomes a spectacle. Th......
