Throughout many centuries, the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table has inspired countless forms of individuals. Director John Boorman, relying on Malory?s Le? Morte d? Arthur, has taken this 1500-year-old tale and transformed it into the classic film Excalibur. Boorman has included a plethora of archetypes and psychological traits to convey universal themes with which all people can identify. During the film, Boorman employs several situational, character, and symbolic archetypes to portray this timeless story of magic and history. For example, Boorman illustrates situational archetypes when Arthur departs to find a sword for Sir Kay. Upon Arthur?s arrival to Excalibur, Arthur undergoes a task to pull the sword from the stone and reclaim what is rightfully his: king of the land. Arthur has an obligation to be a good and pure king, and bring hope back to the people. In addition, Sir Lancelot encounters a loss of innocence when he acquires an unhealable wound.
