Imagery and Tone in the Great Gatsby Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

America in the 1920s was a profound decade for African-Americans. Finally, people of color were gaining equality within the nation. However, even though the minority as a whole was thriving, individual identity was hard to come by. Through literature many poets gained their own identity. Langston Hughes, with the use of imagery and tone, is one of those poets, who during the Harlem Renaissance, stood out not just in the African American community, but also among the whole nation. Hughes establishes his point of view by using distinct imagery. Beginning with “rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins” (Hughes 2-3) he appeals to the sense of sight. This makes the image of human blood in human veins stand out and emphasizes the river, which it’s being compared to, metaphorically. Another strong example of imagery is “I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans, and I’ve seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset” (Hughes 8-10) The detailed imagery attracts the reader to these lines and stimulates......
