“The Necklace” was first published in La Goulois on February 17, 1884, while France was experiencing literary and social rebirth. (http://www.enotes.com/necklace/) This somber and neutral third party narration became Maupassant’s most popular short story. “The“Necklace” “has been compared in theme to Madame Bovary, both works showing young, bored and disenchanted women,” although the final outcomes of their lives differ. (http://www.enotes.com/necklace) It is generally accepted that “The Necklace” is a story about vanity, envy, and a stark contrast between illusion and reality. It is a study in what is perceived and what actually exists. “The Necklace” is Maupassant’s ultimate condemnation of false and superficial values and a society that supports and perpetuates them. Although these high points are often examined, the story’s final irony that a lesson in life’s cruel reality has never been learned by the protagonist is rarely brought into focus.
