Galileo Galilei Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“The purpose of the Holy Scriptures is to tell us how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go.” (Galileo Galilei; First Physicist, p. 81) Galileo Galilei was an independent minded Italian astronomer, mathematician, and philosopher in the sixteen hundreds. His works are some of the most influential amongst the scientific community. His revolutionary work coupled with his life of persecution in search of truth played a key role in the development of the scientific revolution. Galileo was a devout Catholic and initially intended on becoming a priest. His interests shifted to mathematics, which led him to a teaching position at the University of Pisa. His scientific work began in the early sixteen hundreds. At this time, science was based upon Aristotelian notions of logic and natural observation. In terms of astronomy, Aristotle believed that celestial bodies were composed of imperishable material and kept perfect circular motions eternally.
