Fifteenth century philosopher, Renee Descartes, once famously stated I think, therefore I am, describing knowledge as the essence of human existence the quest for infinite wisdom not only holding the key to our progression as a society but to the inevitable downfall of the human race. Within the text, Arcadia, by Tom Stoppard, the path to knowledge is discussed with regards to the eternal war waged between scientific and emotional knowledge and the manner in which the clash of these conflicting understandings hinders the progression of humanity and prevents our discovery of the infinite wisdom we long for. Stoppard creates characters within the context of two time periods to represent the Romantic and Classical movements of the nineteenth century, using such individuals to shape his unique perception of not only the duality of knowledge but the destructive quest we endure to acquire such information; the imbalance of both the carnal and intellectual preventing humanity from achieving a harmonious existence.
