The Australian novel "The Divine Wind" by Garry Disher shows through a combination of damaging events in a time of war and growing self-doubt that it changed people's perceptions of life forever. One of the painful lessons of life is that the past is always with us. Hart is a complex, good-hearted guy who makes one awful mistake and soon regrets it, in a time when the world felt divided and was crumbling around him. As Derby Boxer thanked Hart and his father for helping him when he was almost unfairly changed of assault, Hart felt that there wasn't "much goodness" left within him. At that time in his life we see him reflecting back onto his actions and his guilt of how he treated Jaime, and his obsessive need for Mitsy's attention. Hart had many kinds of "friendship" in the novel with people who society didn't favor and this shows he had goodness in him. Racist people of the time believed the "blacks...where naturally lazy" and felt they had superiority because they had "purity" and were "good stock". Hart socialized with Mitsy and Derby without a second thought, while the commun......
