In the 1930¡¦s the policy of appeasement was introduced by the leaders of Great Britain and France. They continually gave into the demands made by dictators Germany, Italy and Japan in order to steer clear of a war between these countries. The League of Nations proved to be very weak after it was set up at the end of World War one. When Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931, Japan abandoned the league and Britain and France did not do very much in an attempt to stop the Japanese confrontation.
When Benito Mussolini the fascist dictator of Italy invaded Ethiopia, historically known as Abyssinia imposed sanctions were placed upon Italy. A secret plan was conjured to offer Benito Mussolini most of Ethiopia (then called Abyssinia) in return for a truce in the Italo-Ethiopian War. It was put together by British foreign secretary Sir Samuel Hoare and French premier Pierre Laval, who tried and failed to achieve a rapprochement between France and Italy.
