Robert Frost's Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

It is often natural for one to seek a secluded, peaceful retreat when the pressures and expectations of society become too overwhelming. In his poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” Robert Frost dictates the story of a man who passes a snowy wood on his path and is immediately mesmerized by its peaceful, naturalistic atmosphere. However, when looked upon more closely, it becomes evident that this poem tells a deeper story , one of the speaker’s internal struggle; should he remain with society and accept his social duties, to should he escape to the tempting freedom that is offered by the woods? The first stanza of the poem introduces the setting, a snowy wood, as well as introducing the speaker’s conflict. The speaker begins by stating that he “[thinks]” he “[knows]” to whom the woods belong. The structure of this first sentence is an inverted one and immediate relates to the speakers feeling of confusion, though the subject for this confusion is not known.
