The novel explores the life and struggles of Bertrande, during which Bertrande made many decisions for herself and the farm. Early in the novel, Bertrande had little power as a little girl under the rule of her husband and the cap d’hostal. Indeed she worked hard to ‘fit-in’ to her new home. As Martin’s wife, most of her ‘choices’ were in the interest of her husband and the head of the household. For example, when Martin left the farm, she lied to Monsieur Guerre as Martin had told her to. Only after Monsieur Guerre’s death and Martin’s disappearance did Bertrande have some power within the farm. This is when Bertrande could make some decisions for herself. Later in the novel, Bertrande struggles to reveal the imposter, Arnaud de tilh. However, this was “only the truth for” Bertrande “but not for” her sisters. As a religious woman, Bertrande was terrified for her soul as she had committed adultery and “with sufficient warning”. In much of her struggle for the truth, she acted for her own needs with little consideration of others, her household. Bertrande trusted her ......
