Question 4) Mildred Pierce is considered both a film noir and a women’s melodrama. Discuss how the film fulfills the conventions for both of these genres. If you think one genre is more dominant than the other, discuss how and why this is the case. Mildred Pierce is a film noir but not a conventional one at that. It upholds many of these conventions, however it is also very much a women’s melodrama. It is a film that at times is completely one genre and at other times is completely another. So despite the many elements that associate with film noir such as the femme fatale etc, many elements oppose the classic film noir genre for instance the fact that the main character is usually a male led astray, whereas in Mildred Pierce it is the female who is led astray. Therefore, I would define it as a women’s melodrama, with film noir characteristics that are prevalent, because it fulfills the concept of a rebellion in Western patriarchy (a woman fighting to succeed and be independent in a male dominated world).
