James Henry Hammond of the Old South Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

James Henry Hammond and the Old South is the biography of James Henry Hammond, a Southern planter and Congressman. He was raised by his father, Elisha Hammond, who was adamant that James be something great. Although poor, Elisha always provided for his children the best that he could and he made sure that James received the best education. Growing up, James always thought that a career in law could be the key to success and happiness. Eventually, Hammond became a lawyer, much to his father’s delight. After a couple of years, he realized he did not particularly care for the law profession and became the editor of the Southern Times. Around the same time, he met Catherine Fitzsimons, who would later become his wife. Before meeting her, Hammond always shied away from women, even at one point just giving up any involvement romantically with any woman. After proposing to Catherine, her family objected, believing he was only after their money. Although they were correct in their assumptions, Catherine’s mother gave in, and the couple was soon married. The book later mentions how H......
