I found the details of Cortezs conquest of Mexico, discussed in the first part of the essay, to be very interesting.
In the world of the Aztecs and the land of Mexico, the hegemony, wealth, title of nobility, fame, and the powerful of military arms was all Aztec. Cortez was a new arrival and was at a terrible loss. He did not have hegemony or wealth, and in order to have all this he would have to start it by guile and conquest. Cortez believed that there was only one God. However, the Aztecs, believed in a deity name Quetzalcoatl. The Aztecs believed in several Gods actually, but the most important at this time was Quetzalcoatl.
Quetzalcoatl was the God of War, who was banished for destroying his siblings, and the Aztecs feared his return.
Cortez was assumed to be this God, and never let on to be any different right away, since the fact that it kept some of the natives in awe and even kept some of them from attacking.
