Hamlet
On a cold night two watchmen discover a ghost in the Elsinore castle in Denmark. Horatio also sees the ghost that resembles the deceased King Hamlet. “Is it not like the King? As though art to thyself; such was the very armor he had on…” (2411) After the death of King Hamlet, his brother Claudius inherits the throne and marries Hamlet’s wife, Queen Gertrude. When Prince Hamlet is brought to see the ghost, it speaks to him, and declares that he is Hamlet’s father, and orders him to seek revenge on Claudius. “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder.” (2426) “The serpent that did sting thy father’s life, now wears his crown…Aye that incestuous, that adulterate beast…” (2427)
As Prince Hamlet begins his quest to avenge his fatherÂ’s death, he appears to Claudius and Gertrude to have gone emotionally mad. The King and Queen worry about the princeÂ’s erratic behavior. “As it hath used to do, that I have found the very cause of HamletÂ’s lunacyÂ…I doubt it is no other but the main; his fatherÂ’s death and our oÂ’erhasty marriageÂ......
