Confronting truth is TOUGH
The play Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf by Edward Albee is one of the best plays that I have read. In this play, there is no physical hell, but there is hell in many other ways. There is no punishment given but there is a suffering. Even though there is not physical hell, there is incompleteness in characters and emptiness. People cannot be what they want to be. In the play hell is rather in a relationship, a personal life and a psychological hell in peoples mind.
The first example of hell is the relationship between Martha and George. They both disrespect each other. They dont care about each others feelings. They are always arguing with each other and once they even had a physical fight where Nick (an outsider) had to break it off. In act II, Martha is making fun of George and proving him a flop. George gets mad and he grabs her by the throat and Nick comes in middle and pushes George off (Edward Albee, 152). This easily proves that the entire relationship between George and Marta is hell.
