Comparison of Freud and Erikson Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
As a starting point, Freud and Erikson come from a Psychodynamic background. Some might even say that Freud is the founding father of the Psychodynamic approach. Psychodynamic follows the idea that personality is basically a set of dynamics that are constantly in action. This approach is also known as a psychoanalytic theory. I believe it would be important to note a few key assumptions of the psychoanalytic approach. Firstly, is the idea of psychic determinism. The idea behind this is that everything which happens in ones mind has an identifiable cause. Another key assumption is all humans have basic instincts that drive behaviour, however this will be discussed further on in the essay.
As the title notes, this essay is going to look at similarities and differences between Freud (1856 1939) and Erikson (1902 1994). Erikson accepted Freuds basic ideas; however his theory has more of a social and cultural basis. This essay will firstly look at Freud and his basic ideas and then I will move to look at Eriksons ideas and see how they are familiar and different to Freud.......
