Hobbes vs Locke Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Both Thomas Hobbes and John Locke examine the idea of man in a ‘state of nature’ and the social contract as a means of establishing a civil society. Although there are similarities in the basic concepts within each writers work there are also several differences, which lead the writers to very different conclusions. Hobbes’s theory consists of several features. Firstly, he says that man wishes to be happy, in its simplest form Hobbes argues that this is nothing more than the satisfaction of mans desires. He would also say that each person has the right to pursue these desires even at the expense of others. Furthermore according to Hobbes all men are equal since “the weakest has strength enough to kill the strongest” and this natural equality makes people bold. In mans pursuit of his desires he will face competition and, therefore, life within a natural state is filled with danger to your self and your property since from Hobbes’s point of view people cannot show self-restraint and will act only with self-interested motives.
