TV Advertisement on the rise for prescription pills Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In “Prime Time Pushers,” from Reading Life, Lisa Belkin addresses the vast increase in advertisement for prescription drugs on television. She shows that as of recently a lot of pharmaceutical companies have increased their spending on television advertisements and in turn have succeeded in profits. Belkin, then focuses on how easy it is for potential patients to be mislead by television ads. She points out that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) does not have as much power as the public may think when it comes to what ads can and cannot be ran on television. It is sometimes these misleading and uninformed ads that send a person to the doctors’ office to ask for a specific drug they may not need, but saw on television, just as the drug companies intended. Pointing out that even with little knowledge, consumers tend to get what they want, a “quick fix” for their “disease” or “illness”. Throughout this article Belkin supports her argument well.
