Scott and Marthas families differ in many ways the most obvious is how different their adaptation of the modern world is and how they treat their children.
Martha is used to physical and violent punishment which she has grown to expect. It is very old fashioned and cruel.

This shows that Marthas family is old-fashioned. Her mother is not the one to beat her but is seen as a peace maker-

Her father is seen as the one in charge, which was a tradition ages ago, he obviously believes he is free to treat his child in any way he wants. Curled up on the bed suggests that Martha seems to want to be invisible and insignificantly small to the world.
Scotts family allow him to be more free and adapted to the modern technologies. They support him and talk to him kindly.
