Feminism William Shakespeare often portrayed the women in his plays as being strong and confident individuals. This greatly differs from the stereotypical roles of the time period where women had few rights and minimal power in society. They practically had no say in arranging their own marriages, and were expected to marry a man chosen by their father. Desdemona’s father Brabantio suggests that Othello's race makes him capable of ‘black magic’ and that his white daughter could not possibly fall in love with a black man without the help of this magic. The seriousness of this accusation is illustrated by the use of his condemnatory tone in "Thou hast enchanted her....if she enchains that magic were not bound." Although Desdemona is "…bound [to her father] for life and education…", she establishes her belief that she belongs with Othello and defends her love for him, particularly through the dialogue "And so much Duty as my mother showed to you, preferring you before her father, so much that I may profess due to the Moor my lord".
